The World of Fly-Fishing, The Greatest Fly-Fishing Worldwide for Trout
and Salmon, Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish
Reviewed by Terry Lawton
The World of Fly-Fishing, The Greatest Fly-Fishing Worldwide for Trout
and Salmon, Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish, with photography by R Valentine
Atkinson and a foreword by Nick Lyons, is an anthology of fishing writing
covering the best destinations around the world, illustrated by more than
300 of Valentine Atkinsons photographs. As Nick Lyons writes in
his foreword, the book is a visual and verbal feast, a collection of superb
photographs and wonderful essays.
Something
that makes this book more than a coffee table book is the factfile included
at the end of each country/destination section. Countries covered include
the USA, Canada, Iceland, The UK and Ireland, Norway, Russia, New Zealand,
Chile, Argentina and Christmas Islands. As good a choice as anyone could
hope for.
The
essays include contributions from David Profumo, Bill Currie and Leonard
M Wright Jr which have not been published elsewhere while all the rest
have been published in either books or fishing magazines. Other contributors
include John Gierach, Nick Lyons, Tom McGuane, Clive Gammon, Art Lee,
David Street, JW Hills, Neil Patterson, Ernest Schwiebert, Zane Grey,
Verlyn Klinkenberg, Brian Clarke, Roderick Haig-Brown, Russell Chatham
and Peter Kaminsky.
The
book is a master-piece of design and reproduction that will grace any
book shelf. It is printed to a very high standard on a very nice pale
cream paper. While I am sure that all Valentine Atkinsons photographs
are technically of the highest order, I did feel that the subjects and
composition of many were a little predictable. But it is still a jolly
nice book to own and read. A bit too big to read in bed better
in an armchair.
The
World of Fly-Fishing, The Greatest Fly-Fishing Worldwide for Trout and
Salmon, Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish, photography by R Valentine Atkinson,
is published by Duncan Baird Publishers at £25. 320 pages, large
format hardback.
