Lead head nymphThis fly, created by Hans van Klinken, is a really good bottom fishing
pattern. Because of the way the lead head is tied, it also has the advantage
of fishing upside-down, which means you don't get the snags otherwise
experienced. Fish it on the point, with perhaps a pT Nymph on the middle
and a hare's ear nymph on the top (suggestions only, not gospel!). Cast
it up and across at a fine angle to the water, and fish it dead drift
until it is below you. Then twitch it towards you a few times. It will
find fish on its travels, and will have searched the bottom in all but
the fastest water. Try a few more casts at more of an angle to the water
before moving upstream for the next session. Pattern Once you have got the lead shot secured at the eye, take the nylon ends
and the thread down to the bend. Trim the nylon. Tie on the green floss
around the top half of the bend, and then put on two turns of partridge.
The legs can be left quite scruffy. Then tie in two strands of dubbing
rope (or wire, or whatever the manufacturer calls it) and make the bend
end of the case thicker than it is at the aye of the hook. Trim off so
that you get a taper towards the eye - this is not mandatory, but perfectionists
like it that way - and tie off firmly. David Westwood of NorScFly ties exclusively for private clients. All patterns for all gamefish, including magazine flies, and repeats of that last fly you have left. Contact him at Davidflies@btinternet.com |
