19.09.00 Graham Mole has passed on this statement issued by both the Hampshire Wildlife Trust and the Abbotts Barton fishery.

The Joint Statement reads

"An amicable meeting was held between representatives of Abbotts Barton Fishery and the management of Hampshire Wildlife Trust on Friday 1st.September 2000. The Fishery put forward a new proposal for consideration within the context of the future management plan for Winnall Moors Nature Reserve. The Trust agreed to give the proposal serious consideration within the context of the Reserve Management Plan which will be discussed with English Nature, Environment Agency and others. The Trust will make a considered response to Abbotts Barton Fishery in the late autumn. The Abbotts Barton Fishery acknowledged the need for a less intensive approach to better balance the needs of both fishing and wildlife, as well as offering improved access to Trust members. The Wildlife Trust acknowledged that the Fishery has made a serious move to try to meet the needs of the Trust and the Trust would now take time to read the proposal it had just seen in detail"

Don't relax - Abbotts Barton is still under threat - The impression given by a local paper headline was that the Trust had backed down because they had now fixed a meeting with the fishery. However, that meeting has been fixed for a while and is nothing new More...

- Terry Lawton reports on the recent Chastworth Angling Fair:

Big crowds enjoyed a glorious warm and sunny Saturday and a warm Sunday for this year's Chatsworth Angling Fair. Fortunately conditions underfoot for the new site - further downstream from previous years - were good with but one or two wet patches roped off. There was plenty for all fly fishermen to look at, feel, try and even buy.

As in previous years, a number of manufacturers and retailers used the show to sell off ends of ranges and unprofitable lines but this does mean that with careful selection some good bargains are to be had.

There were some interesting new products and ideas including Fishy Pete's Fly of The Month Club and an unusual fly tying vice, the Hilton from Derbyshire Fishing Flies. With the river Derwent flowing past the show site, casting demonstrations can be carried out on moving water - this year's overseas attraction "underhand" casting by Hendrick Mortensen from Denmark - as well as Paul Arden and the Jardine family. Malcolm Greenhalgh and Oliver Edwards conducted river walks looking at trout food and also nymph fishing demonstrations.

An extended report will appear shortly.

The Anglers' Conservation Association (ACA) won its biggest pollution case at the end of last year, after a six year battle. The river Eden had been very badly damaged in 1993 and the AC won a settlement of £415,000.

The ACA is one of the doughtiest of fighters when it comes to going in to battle on behalf of rivers and fisheries that are damaged by pollution.

Fishermen who want to join the ACA can visit its stand at any of the following shows this summer:

6 and 7 May Chatsworth Angling Fair 3 - 6 July The Royal Show, Stoneleigh 28 - 30 July The Game Fair, Blenheim Palace 20 August Cheshire Game Fair

News on the continuing work at the Bintry Mill Trout Fishery in Norfolk can be found in this update by Terry Lawton.

17.1.2000 We've just posted a fresh set of dates on our Diary page including this years Flyfish 2000 exhibition in Leicester to be held on March 10th.

10.12.99 Roger Cullum Kenyon of the Grayling Society has this Autumn 1999 update:

"October is the traditional start of the grayling season in this country although in central Europe and Scandianvia they fish from around the beginning of June for the Lady of the Stream. In the south where I fish we have also fished most of the summer for trout and grayling, but I guess we all tend to look forward to the mellow autumn days and grayling! I write this with a howling gale blowing outside, the fire well stoked up and two friends from the north coming down tonight to stay for the weekend! We will attempt to fish tomorrow but I guess it will be more like dapping and not fly fishing!

October is also the month in which the Society holds its annual 'get together' - our Symposium and AGM - and for this year we were based at the Sheffield Moat House over the weekend of 30/31. Brian Clarke our local area secretary and his small band of helpers arranged a splendid weekend for the 80+ members attending this years symposium - the highlight of our year.

Speakers were Chris Firth of the EA, with an interesting talk on the River Don, James Young MD of Reel makers J.W.Young and Sons talking about - you guessed it .... reel making and his familly firm and Greger Jonsson a biologist from Sweden giving a presentation on river restoration in that country. After a buffet lunch the annual draw took place and the winner of this years first prize was Paul Povey. Han Engelen a Dutch member won for the second time the Righyni/Roose Trophy for an immaculately tied and innovative set of 9 flies, based on the patterns set for this years competition. Next year members are asked to submit photographs with a grayling theme to the chosen pix for this popular competition and the honour of holding the magnificent trophy - a bronze of a grayling - for the year.

The formal part of the Society's business - the Annual General Meeting - was held after tea. All standing officers were re-elected and the accounts presented for the year and with that over, our day was completed with the Gala Dinner and tackle auction that follows. On Sunday we fish for Grayling on some of the most exclusive waters in that part of the country - all fishing being generously offered by local clubs and associations. The auction made just over £1000 for the Grayling Research Trust - a charity which the Society supports.

Other news is that for next year we will be attending the Angling Fair at Chatsworth in early May and the Fly Fair in Holland, together with the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace in late July. Other shows may well have a Society presence with our regional people attending and these venues and dates will be published next year."
