Testers' comments

Simon Lewin: An excellent, forgiving, through actioned rod.

This was a joy to use - an excellent rod for beginner and expert alike. This is one of those rare rods that really makes it clear what you should be doing and when. You can really 'feel' the backcast, knowing when the rod is well loaded.

The build quality was good and I'd recommend this for use on rivers and even on small stillwaters. I tried initially with a 5# but later tested it with a 4# - and personally I thought the rod performed better with the lighter line.

Richard Slaughter: For the price, the standard of workmanship is amazing with a good reel seat and cork handle. The rod was well balanced and had a forgiving action. Short and medium casts were a real pleasure. I did have to double haul, in conjunction with a slower casting stroke, to get a long line out. But this is not what this rod is designed for. For me, the forgiving action allowed for correcting any mistakes in the cast and the rod handled both the 4# and 5# lines well.

This rod is an exceptional buy. It will suit any river fishermen but also has the capability to handle small stillwaters in the hands of a "nympher" who wants to try lighter tackle. Wow!

Terry Lawton: For sometime now Greys has put in a lot of time and effort developing new rods but has not always succeeded in producing a really desirable rod. But with this rod Greys has produced a real winner. The build quality of this rod is very good with a lined stripping rings, chrome snakes, hayfork tip top and a good quality cork handle and reel seat. My first thoughts were that the handle looked a bit on the thin side but in practice it seemed fine. Anyone with a small hand will appreciate the size of the handle.

How does it cast? Extremely well. It roll casts very well and has a very nice, forgiving through action that will put out plenty of line. Short casting ease and accuracy were very good and the rod felt very smooth and vibration free. Although it is rated for a 4# or 5# line, I felt that the 5# was too heavy. It casts very much better with a 4#. If I had access to a 3# line during the test day, I would have tried one on it. I am sure that it would have worked very well.

At a retail price of £69 Greys deserves to have a real winner with this rod. I have no hesitation in recommending this rod to anyone who wants an attractive and well built rod for use on small rivers and streams.
