Testers' comments

Terry Lawton: This is a big, powerful rod. Even my less than perfect casting was good enough to cast a whole 8# line! The rod has a powerful feel and could be hard work for a long day's fishing. Talking to Richard about it, I wonder if this rod is a bit of a specialist's tool: ideal for handling shooting heads and fast sinking lines and the like.

Only one of the rods that we tested could be said to have had a top quality cork handle but this handle was of acceptable quality. The blank was nice and smooth and, once again, represents excellent value for money. I think that other rod manufacturers will get worried when they see the quality that Greys is producing at very competitive prices.

This rod was not one of my favourite of the stillwater rods that we tested although it is a lot of rod for the money.

Richard Slaughter: This rod was nicely made and well finished. I liked the reel seat in particular. The rod felt heavy for its length but it did load well. I could feel the action of the line right through to the handle! I had trouble maintaining accuracy on short casts. However the rod handled roll and medium casts very easily. Long casts were no problem at all as long as you have the stamina.

Final thoughts? What a beast! It will be good for bank fishing reservoirs. But it sapped my strength quickly and I would not be able to fish with rod for any length of time without a good rest.

Simon Lewin: This isn't my kind of rod. I guess this would be ideal for use on a windy reservoir but I found it too heavy for continued use. That said, it managed to get plenty of line out and was a good caster - though I'm not entirely sure how I'd describe the action.
