Testers' comments

Simon Lewin: This is a good small river rod - perhaps tip actioned. Personally I think I'd prefer something a little more forgiving, but that's more to do with my casting than the rod's abilities. I'd say that this rod will need good, fluid casting to make the most of it. But the blank is excellent and I have no doubt that a more able caster would really bring out the best in this rod.

Richard Slaughter: This rod was deep blue in colour and had nicely-spaced snake rings. The quality of the cork handle was moderate and the reel seat uninspiring. The rod's action was very smooth and overall the rod had a nice feel to it. Short and medium casts were no problem with the stripping ring controlling the line to the snake rings really well. The rod casts a longer line well - once I managed to load it. I struggled to get a good quality roll cast - probably me. It needed a fair length of line to get it to load properly.

All in all it is a nice rod for the price and good value.

Terry Lawton: There is some confusion with Redington rods as the Guide catalogue shows all models as having a single line rating, whereas the rods that we tested were marked with dual line ratings. Guide tell me that they do this as they feel the rods are better suited to the heavier of the two lines, which they show in their catalogue.

This is a very impressive small river rod. It will cast 45' of line very easily, with good loop control and excellent line speed. It feels like nothing in your hand (good balance) but is very powerful. Although I used the Guide-recommended 4# line, I would have liked to have tried it with a 3#. Roll casting performance was outstanding for such a short rod. The blank is, to my way of thinking, outstanding and lives up to its description of middle to tip fast action: but it is still forgiving! If only Redington would fit a prettier handle (the quality of the cork on this rod was acceptable) and reel seat, charge another £10 for it, it would be a cracking rod.

I would buy this rod for its blank and replace the handle and reel seat with some better quality components. The result would be a wonderful little rod and a pleasure to own. It has the potential to be a little beauty, but sadly not in factory trim.
